Bike Packing

Two boneheads backpacking with their bikes

Lee, Paula and I went for a short hike in the Tucson Mountains, with packs and bikes. The sun was blasting and it was ~90 degrees, but we are going to need some heat acclimation, anyway, right?

The outing was a success, and we are now more confident that carrying our bikes+gear across the Grand Canyon is not as crazy as some people suggest. What was not fun about the hike was trying not put either A) my seat or B) my sleeping pad into the many cacti on the sides of the trail. That got old after about 3 hours. I think I escaped with only a few little needles in my seat. I’m sure I’ll find more the next time I ride, though.

The wildflower blooms have been fantastic this summer, but I enjoy cactus flowers more. And it looks like our trip is timed well. Hedgehogs have begun, a few prickly pears and the chollas are on the cusp. I think it’s time to ride the Arizona Trail.
