CDTbike photos through Durango

I’m filling in the gaps in the photo story. Since I had my computer in Pagosa, I threw lots of photos into the actual daily entries. If I were really on top of things I’d have a Wifi camera that could transfer photos to my phone for direct posting. But I’m not that on top of things, and we do have computers that the Post Office is so kindly bouncing along for us. Plus I kind of like the photo/caption posts.

We only crossed the CDT here, though it is open to bikes for 12 miles to Wolf Creek Pass. Too much snow and mud, even at this low point on the ridge. It is a stretch that has be ridden by people I know, so I’m not too worried about having missed it.

Instead we dropped down to our San Juan river crossing, en route to Pagosa — a route hikers took to bail out of the snow.

Nice trails on the mesa right above our motel. A sanity break from a moto-crazy tracking weekend.

Another longer break, up to Jackson Mountain. I broke a spoke, flatted and we wished we had rain gear on this ride. Sometimes it seems like we can ride across the country but can’t do a simple 2 hour ride!

Better to have mishap on 2 hour loops, I suppose.

Hey! I recognize that rig. It was the one that tried but failed to cross the San Juan the night we bushwhacked around it. Small town.

Highly used singletrack!

We haven’t ridden actual ‘mountain bike trails’ (as if such a thing exists) since… Tucson?

The connection over to Devil Creek wasn’t all hike-a-bike, it was just mostly hike-a-bike.

Keeping tires out of the mud. We could have ridden the meadow since it was signed open to bikes and shoes, but closing it to vehicles effectively made the road/trail disappear!

Middle Mountain hike-a-bike of quality.

Getting suckered by beautiful meadows… down impossible trails.

Dudley trail was a dud, but at least we didn’t walk down the *entire* 2500′ descent. Just most of it.

One of our first stops in Durango was to Diaz Suspension Design. It was pretty amazing to get 3 of our 4 air shocks completely rebuilt, in an afternoon. That doesn’t happen very often in the middle of 3000 mile tours!

Thanks Anthony!

Time for some day rides … you know, regular old and super fun mountain biking! Horse Gulch!

Animas Mtn is my favorite in-town trail.

Fun climbing, switchbacks.

Views aren’t half bad, either!

Test tracks!

Snow?! As soon as we got on the CT.

But we chose a mostly south-facing route, coincidentally our favorite high country loop from last summer.

This time we had Cat to chase around on it. “I always go on the best rides with you guys.”

She’s riding a notch or two faster than our tour mode can reach, but it was fun to try.

I’m so excited for more of this … across the whole state!

Flowers are just starting…

Our love affair with Engineer Mtn, and all that surrounds it, is still going strong.

So lucky we got to ride it this summer.

Especially nearly totally dry.

CDTbike is loading up the ponies and hitting the trail tomorrow! House sitting gig is up, snow is still lingering, but has melted considerably, and we are itching to keep heading north. It’s been a great stay in Durango, but it’s time to continue the Journey.
