Day 32 – This is Big country and a Big bear

We were all set to camp above Bolam lake, eating dinner and settling in.  Then I saw a rather large bear walking just in front of us, heading down to the lake. “Hey Bear!”

It scurried off as soon as it heard us… but camp felt compromised.  We had tried to stop early. There was still daylight left. So we pedaled on.

And it was a brilliant idea. Thanks big bear!

We neared treeline looking for camp and instead found a hundred strong herd of elk grazing in the green green meadows.  They were incredible to watch. Such huge animals but they almost looked like birds or insects moving silently together. Super cool.

Ez suggested what I was thinking–keep going and camp on the ridge. The view was sure to be the biggest yet and bugs and dew would be minimal.  Sure we are nearly at 12000 feet but if you want to sleep on top of the world….

We had hoped to camp last night on Indian ridge, but had to settle for traversing it under blue skies and perfect weather. There’s lots of hike a bike but it never stings.. just look around and all is well.

The Colorado Trail is no joke over here. So much climbing and so much trail. You earn every last bit though.  Mad respect to those that raced the CTR last year (when it was run backwards). Climbing out of durango is a rough way to jump on the trail.

It beat us down pretty well, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.  We expect some good snow drifts tomorrow and the best sunrise view yet.  We have both Lizard Head and Engineer visible right out our ‘window’.
